Surinder T. AI Product Designer

Why hire a designer when AI can generate the screens?

Because the screens were never the hard part. AI generates layouts in seconds. I use it every day. What it cannot generate is judgment. Which of 20 directions survives real buyers. Why users hesitate at the exact moment of paying. What to build at all. You hire a designer for the decisions behind the screens.

AI did not replace taste. It exposed the lack of it.

Every founder now has the same tools. The same models, the same templates, the same prompts. So the outputs converge. Open 10 AI-built product pages and you will see the same page 10 times. Clean, complete, and interchangeable.

Interchangeable is expensive. Your buyer compares you in 3 tabs. If your product looks like the other 2 tabs, price becomes the only difference. That is a race you do not want to win.

Here is the split that matters. Tools solve the can-do problem. Can a screen exist, can a flow work, can a checkout function. They are genuinely good at this now. What they do not touch is the will-do problem. Will a stranger trust this page with their card. Will they pick the plan you need them to pick. Will they come back next week.

That second problem is behaviour, not layout. It took me 19 years to read it properly. Which hesitation is a design flaw and which is a pricing flaw. When social proof helps and when it smells desperate. Why a shorter form sometimes converts worse. The screen shows none of this. The numbers after launch show all of it.

A simple test for any AI-built design: ask why. Why this order of sections. Why this price placed here. Why these 3 features and not the other 12. A generator has no answer. A designer has a reason for every decision, and the reasons are what you are paying for.

I should be honest about my own position here. I am not the designer arguing against AI. I build with it daily and I ship AI products of my own. The tools made me faster. They did not make the decisions. That part still costs experience, and experience is the thing you are actually hiring.
