Why hire 1 senior instead of an agency?

The short answer

Count the layers between you and the person building. An agency quote pays for account managers, project managers and handoffs before anything works. 1 senior designs and builds it, so every hour goes into the tool. I hired both as a design manager at a $1B brand. The layers made the difference.

In 1 picture

An agency

  • An account manager takes the brief
  • A project manager runs the plan
  • A designer hands off to developers

1 senior

  • Designs and builds it
  • Shows you a live demo every week
  • Fixes the price before the build
The layers between you and the person building.

Where does an agency's price go?

Workshops, stakeholder decks, account managers, and review rounds between people who never touch the build.

The billable hours are real. The building hours are a fraction of them. With 1 senior, every hour is a building hour.

Is 1 person a risk?

The real risk is the bus factor: 1 person, and what if they vanish. Structure answers it.

A fixed scope. A live demo every week. Files handed over as the work happens, not at the end. And when the work needs more hands, I bring in senior specialists I trust.

When is an agency the right call?

When you need 5 workstreams at once: brand, web, app, campaigns and support. Or when procurement needs a bench.

For 1 AI tool, designed, built and launched, the bench is overhead you fund.

What do you tell whoever signs off?

Same tool, fewer layers. Direct access to the senior doing the work, 19 years in. A price fixed before the build starts.

Then ask the agency who will build your tool. And how often you will speak to them.
