Should I build an app or a mobile website first?
Start where your users already are: the browser. A mobile website earns strangers, an app serves believers. Websites are found by search, opened from links, tried without commitment. An app asks for storage, a download, and trust you have not earned yet. Prove the habit on the web first. Build the app when returning users outgrow the browser.
The wrong question is which is better. The right question is who you are building for this quarter.
A website earns strangers. No download, no permission, no commitment. A link opens and the product speaks. Search and AI answers can find it. Nobody searches an app store for a brand they do not know.
An app serves believers. Notifications, offline, the home-screen icon. Those are retention tools. Retention tools need someone to retain.
The install is a toll. Storage, a download, an account. Each is a cost paid before value. Strangers rarely pay it. Returning customers barely notice it.
The order that works: web first, measure who returns, then build the app for the returners. The app becomes a reward for the relationship, not a bet on one.
When the app comes first. The product is the phone: camera, sensors, offline field work. Or the habit is daily by nature, messaging, tracking, banking. Then the app is the product, not a channel.
19 years across both sides. The pattern that survives: the web converts curiosity, the app compounds loyalty.
Meet strangers in the browser. Move friends to the home screen.
