# Why do users stop using AI features after the first week?

Because the first week runs on novelty, and novelty is not a job. The demo moment amazes, then the blank prompt box starts asking the user to work. A feature survives when it attaches to something the user already does every week. Most AI features live in their own tab, waiting. Habits do not form in tabs nobody opens.

## Week 1 runs on novelty.

The install curve looks great. The week 2 curve tells the truth.

The first sessions are exploration: look what it can do. Users do not abandon the AI. They abandon the effort of thinking of a use for it.

## What is the blank box problem?

An empty prompt field is a cost. Every use starts with the user doing the design work: what to ask, how to phrase it.

Suggested actions, 1 tap starts and defaults move that cost from the user to the product. Defaults are the strongest persuasion tool an interface has.

## Where should the AI live?

In the path, not in a tab. An AI tab is a destination, and destinations need reasons. A suggestion inside an existing flow needs none. It meets the user mid-task.

In an internal tool, that means the invoice screen, the approval queue, the onboarding form.

## Why give it a memory?

A feature that remembers last week compounds. Progress shown is the goal gradient at work: people continue what they can see advancing.

Check your own product. Does the AI feature have a trigger in the user's normal week? If not, week 1 was the whole relationship.

## In 1 picture

Novelty fades after week 1. A feature inside the work keeps its users.

- In its own tab: high at first, then falls, from Week 1 to Week 8
- Inside the daily task: holds, from Week 1 to Week 8

- [Why do AI apps lose subscribers faster than normal apps?](https://www.surinder.design/work/why-ai-apps-lose-subscribers-faster): Because the wow moment is not a habit. RevenueCat's 2026 data puts AI app annual retention at 21.1%, against 30.7% for everything else.
