Signal · news app concept, 30+ screens

**30+ screens and 80+ components, day and night** · Design concept, scope from its files

Signal is a news app I designed end to end, as a concept. It is built for a reader who scans first and reads later. The home gives the day at a glance. Stories read long without strain. Live coverage runs update by update. 30+ screens, in day and night, right to left ready.

## The problem

Readers scan the news first and read in depth later, on a phone.

## What changed

- The day at a glance, on 1 home screen
- Long reads, live coverage and a feed built from your topics
- 30+ screens, in day and night, right to left ready

## The result

30+ screens and 80+ components, day and night · Design concept, scope from its files

## Tab by tab

### Home

The day at a glance, from 1 screen.

- Scannability: topic tabs on top, then 1 lead story, big.
- Context: today's date and weather sit beside the news.
- Social proof: every story shows how many readers liked it.
- 2 home screens: Latest News, with topic tabs and 1 big lead story with its likes. Then stories by topic, today's date and weather, and trending stories. From 768px, the video tab with its featured video.

### Story

A story page built for the long read.

- Focus: 1 photo, the title and the author, then the text.
- Rhythm: a pull quote breaks up the long read.
- Effort: follow and share sit right under the title.
- A story: a big photo, the title, the author with Follow, a row of share buttons and the text. Further down, a pull quote. From 768px, a full-photo story beside them.

### Live

Live coverage, update by update.

- Urgency: a red LIVE tag sits above the headline.
- Recency: each update carries its date and time.
- Effort: share sits under every update.
- A live report: a red LIVE tag over the headline, a photo, then updates down the screen, each with its date and time and its share buttons.

### Your feed

The feed starts with what you pick.

- Defaults: topics come first, so the first feed already fits.
- Clarity: each topic says in 1 line what it covers.
- Control: Skip is always there.
- Save your interests from topic chips. Then tick topics from a list, each with a short line on what it covers, and Skip at the foot. From 768px, topics to pick by photo.

### Day and night

30+ screens, in light and dark.

- Comfort: a night theme for reading in the dark, from the same parts.
- Reach: right to left in 1 switch, for Arabic and Urdu readers.
- The same home screen in dark, from 768px beside the light one, and the settings screen laid out right to left with its RTL switch on.
- 30+ screens and 80+ components, day and night. Design concept, scope from its files.
